Esther the Wonder Pig: Changing the World One Heart at a Time
By: Steve Jenkins, Derek Walter, Caprice Crane / Narrated By: Steve Jenkins
Length: 4 hrs and 43 mins
Those who obtain the pig must obtain the farm…!
So there Steve Jenkins is, minding his own business, when ping! He’s offered a micro-piglet. What’s an animal-loving man to do? Ask his partner if they can bring it home?!?
Well, of COURSE not! That would be the rational thing to do. Even better, one might Google all things pig-related for info. TOTALLY rational, right?
But that’s not what softhearted Steve Jenkins does. He hilariously dashes outta town, picks up the piglet then makes a bit of a hackneyed excuse about why he and Derek, his partner, neeeeeed a pig in their lives.
That the micro-piglet is actually a commercial one, soon to grow into the size of a beast? Well, they’ll deal with that later. That Esther, as they’ve named her, is actually one mega-sharp gal? Well, they’ll run after her when she douses herself in oil and roams through the house then wallows all over their bed… later…!
For now, however, Jenkins and Derek just love her to pieces, and Esther soon even gets her own Facebook page, gathering followers from all over the place, garnering Likes like you would not believe. That they’re not supposed to have an animal with hooves within the city limits? Wellllll, they’ll deal with that later too. But Esther’s celebrity status has them running scared.
Esther the Wonder Pig is all about Esther’s exploits and Steve and Derek trying to do the right and most loving thing for her. It’s SUCH a sweet book, and it’s funny as heck. The best part is how many people the two (and Esther!) inspired on their journey with her. They took a look at their own lives, decided that they just COULDN’T eat another pig and made changes. Along the way, that inspired others to adopt cruelty-free lifestyles; and the duo did it in the best way: They just kept followers and friends abreast of Esther’s shenanigans and didn’t become Veggie Nazis at all.
The book also ends with a brand new beginning as the two float a bright idea on Facebook, set up a funding page elsewhere, make an outta this world, ya-gotta-be-outta-your-mind to accept this kinda offer on a farm, and they actually make things happen. Steve and Derek become the proud owners of the farm and have turned it into an animal sanctuary, saving many, many lives even as they continue to love and protect Esther and give her the best, most free, life possible.
The sequel is Happily Ever Esther, and if you think I’m going to miss out on it, you’re quite daft!
All you have to do, my friend, is wait for the upcoming review.
After all, National Pet Month is but weeks away!
