One Frosty Christmas

One Frosty Christmas

The Holiday Series, Book 1

By: Laura Hesse / Narrated By: Leslie Howard

Length: 3 hrs and 31 mins

Sweet horse and girl story, just in time for the Holidays

Hannah Storey lost both her grandmother and the lower part of her leg in a car accident before the story opens. Not only that, but she lost her hometown, her old school, and all her friends when her family moved from the city to River Bend, a place she feels where she’ll never fit in. After all, the townsfolk ridicule city dwellers who come to the country, as though they’re incapable of doing the hard work that life in the country demands. Add to that, Hannah as an amputee, and well, they don’t hold her in high estimation.

On the way to school, during interminable rides on the school bus where she sits alone and deals with the teases and taunts of her schoolmates, she spies Frostbite, an old mustang alone and abused, forever in a pasture suffering from malnutrition and a lack of proper shelter. Rumor has it that the old man who lives by himself wants the horse to die, will sell it to a slaughterhouse, will shoot anyone who tries to help it with his shotgun.

Hannah’s heart is touched, and thus begins her taming of the wild and fearful horse. Soon, she’ll do anything to save Frostbite, naming him Frosty instead, ‘cause it turns out, he trusts Hannah as he’ll trust no-one else.

What I liked about the audiobook is how Hannah’s deep devotion brings her friends, brings the community together even as she pushes the envelope and puts herself and others in danger, all in the name of getting Frosty to a better place.

This is a book for a younger audience, as Leslie Howard’s narration is slow and breathless, just as a young girl would speak, think, and respond. But you’ll be entertained even as your youngsters listen because it truly is a sweet story, sure to please those who are DYING to have a pony of their own. This was just in time for the Season, and Christmas is a time for song, friendship, bonds, and even a miracle or two.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily provided this review.
