Six Geese a-Slaying
Series: Meg Langslow, Book 10
By: Donna Andrews / Narrated By: Bernadette Dunne
Length: 7 hrs and 22 mins
Just what a cozy mystery should be!
In this Book 10 of the Meg Langslow series, Meg is in charge of Caerphilly’s holiday parade (and they do mean “holidays”. EVERY holiday is being celebrated—all in a single parade!). The 12 Days of Christmas is the theme, and that includes six geese, all played by SPOOR members (Stop Poisoning Our Owls and Raptors). She has to quell the unrest they cause, cuz they’re plenty mad that the man playing Santa is a total jerk when it comes to caring for creatures in the environment.
Unfortunately, Santa is just a plain ol’ jerk. To everyone. He even has a dog biting his leg as he, Ralph, tries donning the Santa suit. (Apparently, he’s the only person in Caerphilly with a tummy, a beard, and is small enough to fit into the costume).
Hijinks ensue when dear old Santa is found murdered, stabbed with a stake of holly through his heart. And it just happens that the stake is a broken piece of a SPOOR protest sign.
There are many suspects (did I mention that Santa’s a total toad? No offense to toads?), too many suspects, but goose-clad SPOOR members head the list.
This cozy mystery has all the sweet things a cozy mystery should have: Suspects aplenty, a bit of romance, some red herrings, and plenty of charming humor. There’s even an intrepid reporter making the investigation, making life itself, difficult for all involved. And Meg is plenty involved. Her nosiness makes sense, isn’t too obtrusive, but she’s believable as an amateur sleuth. My only problem is when she displays super-human strength when she has to help her hapless brother out of a tight spot.
You only have a few hours for an audiobook? Check out Six Geese a-Slaying; you don’t have to be familiar with all the other books in the series, and Bernadette Dunne, as usual, is fantastic. She delivers the clever quips with as much verve as she does the ominous. Truly a cozy little book that had me hankering for a mug of hot chocolate!
