The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts

Written and Narrated By: Gary Chapman

Length: 4 hrs and 46 mins

Totally awesome. Even if I’m still confused about my dearest’s language…

I should know, after listening to The 5 Love Languages, what my husband’s love language is, but he’s just so gosh-darned amiable that I can’t quite get a handle on it. Shame on me!

Because the audiobook goes into great depth about each language, about how to make your relationships the absolute best they can be. It’s filled with case studies, personal stories, methods for determining the language your significant other speaks. It even has a FAQ section at the end that is filled with, honest to God, questions that I was sincerely asking (because usually FAQs have the ODDEST questions that NOBODY would EVER ask!).

What I liked about it is that anybody can use it, not just couples. That means it could be used by one partner desperately wishing to make changes in the relationship. You learn the other’s language, and you’re very, very much closer to getting where you want to be (even though Chapman points out that simple does not mean easy. You yourself might not be anywhere near comfortable speaking the other’s language—say, you come from an undemonstrative family and your partner’s language is Physical Touch. Uh-oh right there, no?).

I also liked how he included “dialects” within each language. A couple can both have Acts of Service as their language but will be totally clueless about which acts would mean the most. So I guess this audiobook is a good listen if you can get your partner to listen also (but remember: you can still implement it even tho’ it’s just you having a go).

Chapman narrates this very well. It’s never a boring or monotonous delivery, and there’s some humor in it that comes through. Also, it’s Christian and Scripture-based, but please don’t think you can’t use it if you feel you’re not religious. It’s just that some of the quotes do indeed come in handy.

Great book, even if I’m still scratching my head because my husband is so gosh-darned awesome.
